| On May 1, 2005, DDS swapped out its current mainframe computer and replaced it with IBM’s top-of-the-line eServer zSeries 990 (z990). The new mainframe increases DDS' processing power to 1620 millions of instructions per second (MIPS).
“We decided to upgrade our two-year-old z900 mainframe to improve the response times for our clients,” says Frank DeSantis, DDS’ director of operations.
This is DDS’ second major investment in the mainframe in two months. In March 2005, due to a sudden rise in processing requests, we arranged with IBM to activate the two remaining engines on our current mainframe computer. This 20% increase in our processing power from 1305 to 1567 MIPS dramatically speeded up performance and enhanced Soon and Overnight report generation. “I am gratified that we succeeded in adding the extra power before the March month-end crunch,” states DeSantis.
The new mainframe enhances capabilities in addition to adding power. “The z990 gives us the flexibility to allocate additional processing power at peak times,” explains DeSantis. “Our investment in the new platform is about anticipating our clients’ future needs, and demonstrates our commitment to providing the best possible service.”
