| “Twenty years ago, four spots got you 100 grps. Today you need to buy 24 spots to achieve the same 100 grps.”
This observation was expressed by Kathy Crawford, president of local broadcast at MindShare, at the eBiz for Media Report: Small Steps Lead to Success panel discussion at the 2006 AAAA Media Conference and Trade Show. The panel focused on how to save time and money considering the growing volume of business transactions in our industry.

DDS chairman and CEO Michael Donovan, who participated as a panelist, stated that “DDS processes over four million DARE transactions a year, and the number continues to grow. DARE has become the de facto EDI standard in our industry. Moreover, our MediaOcean system fills an important need by forming an electronic loop that connects agencies, media sales, and station traffic.”
The panel advocated supporting open-standard XML in media systems, to accommodate trading partners that aren’t DARE-enabled. “DDS is already promoting XML initiatives, and processed more than 15,000 XML orders in 2005,” stated Donovan. “Adopting new technologies such as XML coincides with DDS’ goal of achieving industry-wide electronic transactions for all trading partners,” he said.
Donovan maintained that DDS would support additional implementations of XML technology into the electronic capabilities of DDS applications, which are already based on electronic transactions.
